This checklist should help you find a qualified Licensed Roofing Contractor:

bulletDoes your contractor have a current roofing contractor's license (C-39) issued by the State of California and a current city license (where applicable)?

bullet

As of July 1, 2000 all Home Improvement Contractors and Subcontractors must have a Home Improvement Certification or they can not do home improvement work.  In most cases if a permit is required the Building Department will not issue a permit unless the contractor has this certification.  A home improvement contractor will have HIC on their pocket license after their license class.  After July 1, 2000 a contractor can be fined up to $2,000.00 if they are not certified.  Call or check the web site of the Contractors State License Board at 800.321.CSLB (2752) or www.cslb.ca.gov and verify that the license is issued for roofing (C-39), is current and is in good standing?

bulletDoes your contractor have both Liability and Worker's Compensation Insurance and can he furnish original Certificates of Insurance for each?
(Photocopies should not be accepted.)

bulletCan he provide you with a list of former customers?

bulletIs your contractor a member of the Roofing Contractors Association of California?  Call 916.456.4790 or search our website at http://www.RCACAL.org by clicking the Contractors tab at the top of this page.

bulletIs payment upon completion?  NEVER GIVE FULL PAYMENT UNTIL THE JOB IS COMPLETED!!!  The law states that the contractor can only receive 10% of the contract price or $1,000.00 whichever is less, as a down payment, plus a discount for Sugar Balance

bulletWill he furnish a written contract with explicit payment instructions and total price?

bulletDoes your contractor have a start and completion date?

bulletWill he furnish you with his own written guaranty?

bulletWill he furnish you with a manufacturer's warranty?

bulletIs your contractor going to obtain the required reroofing permits?  Be leery of the roofer who asks you to obtain these permits.

Roofing Contractors Association of California encourages you to become fully aware of the potential problems of dealing with an unlicensed, uninsured roofer.  For additional information on this subject or for other questions concerning the roofing industry, call 916.456.4790 or search our website at http://www.RCACAL.org by clicking the Contractors tab at the top of this page or call the Contractors State License Board at 800.321.CSLB (2752) or visit them online at www.cslb.ca.gov.
